Cuzco
Just a quick note for now - will write more (and hopefully post some pics) tomorrow. Have been in Cuzco for a bit over a day now. It's an absolutely stunning city.
Did a day tour of the sacred valley of the Incas today. The country side around Cuzco is also beautiful. Something about being surrounded by mountains and ruins i guess. We had to do a bit of a climb up some steps to get to get to a couple of the ruins, and boy was that hard, particularly due to the altitude - one of the ruins was at 3,800 metres above sea level. Apparently takes 2 - 3 days to aclimatize.
But it does make me a bit concerned about the trek that i'm going to be doing on Saturday, which will be much, much worse! It's the Salkantay trek rather than the Inca Trail cos the trail was all booked out, but i'm told by some people that it's actually better in the end cos you're not surrounded by masses of tourists, you see much of the same sort of scenery, and both treks end up at Machu Pichu. On the other hand, it's 5 days of trekking rather than the 4 days of the Inca trail, and supposed to be tougher. Also a bit concerned about camping outdoors at night in the freezing cold (apparently it can get up to -15 degrees). Oh well, it'll be one of those "hard at the time but glad that you've done it" sort of things i'm sure.
Anyway, gotta go get ready for dinner. One of the great things about the tour today was that i've made some friends (2 Canadians and 1 Brit)to eat and go out with. Am going to try and find a salsa place. The British guy has done some lessons and the Canadian seem quite keen on going.
